Who are English Language Learners?

  • Canadian-born: children raised in a family in which languages other than English are spoken
  • Newcomers to Canada: refugees, immigrants or international students

How do we support English Language Learners?

  • Teachers for English language learners offer support for students and teachers in their schools
  • English as a second language (ESL) program at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (Peterborough)
  • Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program offers students and their families help with housing, immigration, employment, recreation, etc.
  • Language Line Telephone Translation Service
