Anishinaabemowin Language Program
The Anishinaabemowin program has been designed to provide students with:
- a general understanding of the nature and function of Anishinaabemowin
- a foundation of language knowledge and skills that will enable students to communicate in Anishinaabemowin
- an understanding and appreciation of Anishinaabemowin as an expression of a distinctive culture
The goal of the program is to inspire students with pride in Anishinaabemowin, motivate them to use the language to communicate in their daily lives, and use the language as part of a living culture.
Anishinaabemowin classes are available at the following KPR schools
- Lakefield District Public School
- Thomas A Stewart Secondary School
- Cobourg Collegiate Institute
- Roseneath Centennial Public School
- North Shore Public School
More information is available in KPR's Indigenous Language Program Policy.
Who can take Anishinaabemowin?
The programs are available to all Indigenous and non-Indigenous students enrolled at a school that offers the program. They are available to other schools where numbers warrant and based on availability of staff. Students who study Anishinaabemowin at the elementary level, may substitute that language for French at the secondary level. The only requirement is the desire to learn Anishinaabemowin and to develop a better understanding of Indigenous culture.
