Volunteers Helping Students Excel in Learning!
Volunteers at Ganaraska Trail PS and Kaawaate East City Public School are Helping Students Excel in Learning!
We are pleased to recognize three Volunteer Accolade Award Recipients for their time and effort spent fostering a love for reading, and having a positive impact on students’ literacy skills, and overall success! Establishing a strong foundation for student achievement in literacy is a priority in KPR’s Board Action Plan (BAP).
Over the past few years, Elizabeth Stapells and Susan Wilson have volunteered regularly at Ganaraska Trail Public School, arriving once a week to read (and to be read to) by emerging readers in Kindergarten to Grade 5. Students and staff look forward to these visits, as both Elizabeth and Susan bring along their furry companions and certified therapy dogs, from the Therapeutic Paws of Canada Program and St. John's Therapy Dog Organization!
“These two dynamic duos provide a welcoming, calm and supportive atmosphere for some of our hesitant readers. They care about the well-being of all the students in our school, not just the ones they read with,” shares Special Education Resource Teacher, Keri MacInnes.
At Kaawaate ECPS, Steven Riddell is another outstanding volunteer helping to establish a strong foundation for student achievement in literacy. As a retired teacher, Steven has a passion for making connections with students, and he visits the school three times a week to read one-on-one and in small groups with a variety of junior-age students.
“Steve’s kindness and love of literature is always evident. A voracious reader himself, Steve enjoys bringing his personal picture and chapter books to read with small groups, lend to individuals, and read aloud to the entire class,” says Grade 4/5 Teacher, Matthew Parsons.
“He is always interested in what students have to share and promotes a love of learning through his stories and conversations with those fortunate enough to spend time with him,” Matthew adds.
Thank you to Elizabeth, Susan and Steven for creating a fun and supportive environment for students to practise their reading and literacy skills!
In honour of National Volunteer Week, Trustees recognized school volunteers with Accolade Awards at the April Board Meeting.
