School Climate Survey

As part of our ongoing efforts to create and maintain safe, inclusive, and welcoming schools, all students from Grades 4 to 12 in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, their parents/caregivers, and school staff will be asked to participate in an anonymous School Climate Survey.
 
The School Climate Survey is required every two years by the Ministry of Education and asks students for their opinion on key areas that research has shown to have an impact on student learning outcomes – with a focus on sense of belonging, relationships, safety, and well-being. The survey is customized for KPR students, with one version for Grade 4-6 students, and a slightly longer version for Grade 7-12 students.
 
The parent/caregiver and school staff version of the School Climate Survey contains questions about how students are doing as well as how parents and staff feel about their school. Your answers to this survey will help us know how to make your school experience better.

The survey measures include but are not limited to:

  • School Experiences (e.g., sense of belonging, relationships, learning engagement),
  • Environment (e.g., school environment, learning environment, school discipline, diversity, representation, and inclusion),
  • Safety (e.g., bullying, harassment, discrimination), and
  • Well-being (e.g., general well-being, and social and emotional feelings). 

Some important notes about the survey: 

  • The survey is voluntary; students and parents/caregivers can decide whether they want to complete the survey and can skip any questions they do not want to answer.
  • The survey is anonymous and confidential.
  • Parents who do not want their child (or children) to complete the survey must advise the homeroom teacher by May 24th.
  • The student survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and is completed during class time.
  • Accommodations will be provided for students with diverse learning needs.
  • Results of this survey will be reported at the school level and individual respondents will not be identified.
  • Information will be used by schools to build safer spaces in which everyone is respected and feels that they belong.
  • Students will complete the survey online at school between May 27 and June 14, 2024.
  • Parents/caregivers will receive an email with a link to the parent survey on May 27th.

Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6, and students in Grades 7 to 12, along with learners in the Adult and Alternative Education program, are all invited to tell us about their experiences. 

 Most students will need about 15-20 minutes to complete the survey. Extra time will be available for those students who need it.

No, students are not required to complete the survey.  The Ministry requires all boards to administer a school climate survey every two years. Parents who do not want their child (or children) to complete the survey must advise their school by May 24th.

Each student may also decide if they want to participate, and if they want to skip any questions.  Only the first two questions are mandatory – the question that asks what school they attend and what grade they are in.  Every other question permits them to go to the next question if they wish.  We hope, however that they answer as many questions as possible to amplify student voice at each school.

Responses will be grouped together to better understand the experiences of students, parents/guardians, and staff. All survey information is kept private on a secured KPRDSB computer network. The data will be shared with a consulting company, Turner Consulting Group (TCG), to help us analyze the data. TCG will keep the data secure on their computers and will only use the data to report to KPRDSB findings for groups of students. Collated school climate survey results for each school are shared in a school level report to inform planning and decision making, and support creation and maintenance of positive school climates. 

No. Student responses are collected anonymously. Responses from all students in each school will be combined. Reports will be created that represent a large enough number of students that no individual student could be identified. 

 No. The KPR School Climate Survey is anonymous and confidential. There is no name or number on the School Climate survey, and it won’t be linked to report cards or any other achievement data. 

Yes, any students in Grade 4-12 who are able to may complete the survey. Accommodations will be provided for students with diverse learning needs.

 Yes.  Any student can complete the KPR School Climate Survey on their own device. It's important to encourage students who are not in school all day to do the School Climate Survey. This may also include students who do not have a home room. 

Demographic information can help us determine if there are trends in school experiences that are particular to certain groups of students. This information can inform improvement planning. 

KPR’s School Climate Survey will be open from Monday, May 27 to Friday, June 14, 2024. The survey can be completed anytime during that three-week period. 

Yes, schools will set aside time for everyone to do the survey at once in order to have as many people as possible complete the survey at each school. 

The School Climate Survey can be completed on phones, or any device students use to access the Student Portal. Schools will make devices available for students who need them while at school.

The more students and families who complete the survey, the more detail school reports will be able to provide, and higher response rates increase confidence that a wide range of experiences are captured.

If students are logging on using the same device, there is a chance their earlier responses are still there. If the responses are missing, it doesn’t take long to click the same answers they clicked the first time. Remember to click ‘Submit’ at the end. 

No, after hitting the 'Submit' button, the survey is closed. However, if they have not yet hit 'Submit' they can go back to any earlier question and change it.

They can’t complete the survey more than once. After a student submits their responses, they cannot get back into the survey. It is closed on their Student Portal.
